A Plot is NOT a STORY
A plot is not a story. It only serves to help reveal a story. Let's say you have a favorite coat. You want to see the coat, so you hold it up to yourself -but then you can't see it. You choose to put the coat on a hanger so you can look at it without interference. The coast itself is the story while the hanger represents the plot.
In other words, the plot is the structure from which you hang the story. it is NOT the story itself. If you had no hanger for your coat, it would be a crumpled mess in the corner and you might never see it for all its beauty. If you have no plot, your story will lie in a crumpled mess and no one will ever see it, or understand what you are trying to say.
