Plot Twists

A quote emerging from Hollywood screenwriter:

"Plot is the drugged meat the thief tosses to the guard dogs while the house is being robbed"

Interpretation: The reader follows the plot, but the experience of the story is what is important. The same can be said for plot twists.
It is the writer's job to guide an audience toward a logical conclusion, but a plot that tells the audience where it is going lacks tension and will bore people.

In a narrative, an author needs to direct the audience, but how do you do this without giving away the satisfying or surprising ending?

PLOT TECHNIQUES

Red Herring:

a device that is used to take the audience off track, can similar to B-story. A misleading clue that leas the audience toward a specific conclusion, just not the right one

Reversals:

usually a comedic device but can work well in drama. When a story is going in a predicable direction, things go in completely opposite direction..

..The Producers

Line of Action:

Several plot points in a row might make a story, but will it be an interesting story? You can build the dramatic tension of a story with line of action.

Each choice a character makes must eliminate other choices. one action should deny another action

Having IRREVERSABLE CONSEQUENCES to each choice your characters makes is necessary to build the tension in the plot..think of a films like Sophie's Choice., and Slumdog Millionaire, other films?
