Setting

The setting is the world in which the story takes place. The world itself can be as robust as Harry Potter's Hogwarts or as stark as Mad Max's Australia, but either way, the setting should feed the narrative in subtle yet concrete ways. For example Mad Max takes place in a future post-apocalyptic world where the cordiality of civilization is gone. The setting is a desert, a barren environment where only the very toughest survive. The stark backdrop contributes to the story as much as the characters do. In games, where sometimes characters do not exist, setting becomes an essential part of the story telling process.

The setting can be realistic and mimic real-world rules -or there can be suspension of disbelief, as in the setting of The Lord of the Rings. In some cases, suspension of disbelief combines with realistic elements -such as in the game and the movie Superman, a real-world setting that includes a fantastic hero and surreal circumstances.
