ENTITY-2 actual

ENTITY is project that you will complete part by part over several weeks. This is considered PART TWO. You will use the technique of stop motion to complete this part. You will also work in teams of 4-5 people.

In ENTITY-2 actual, you will begin with found materials, and build your circular or spherical entity and create 20 seconds of abstract animation. Your "entity" can be either circular and flat, and shot on a glass shooter. Or it can be shot on a set and 3 dimensional. In either case you should green screen out the background and keep you entity centered with some space around it.

You may start with a large ball of clay, or mass of material. Then add/subtract parts of your found objects, etc. to create the animation. You can replace small parts, pieces, parts to create difference on every frame. Work together with your teammates to keep the project inspired and experimental, but focused. You may use any material that fits within the range of the camera, and does not cause a huge mess.

YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE for CLEANING UP AFTER your shoot, and return all equipment and stations to the clean state that you found it!! Failure to do so will reflect in your participation grade.

These are tools and strategies that we will learn and experiment with:

  1. Dragonframe and stop motion software
  2. physical animation and experimental materials
  3. using expressions and set driven keys
  4. using good lighting and cinematography skills
  5. using effective artistic skills

Some rules to follow:

  • "entity" should be a very sophisticated collection of many many parts or smaller item objects.
  • parts may be found, created, but must have an inherent relationship. (i.e.: plastic parts, mechanical parts, cloth like fabric/string etc) Your team will have to do allot of hunting and scavenging for material.
  • there must be movement in parts as well as whole object.
  • camera movement may be used..
  • keep "entity" centered in frame, have the parts and and the entity animate. It is OK if it expands or goes out of frame sometimes, just keep it generally centered. Especially at the beginning and end of the cycle.
  • try to make animation "cycle-able" first frame and last frame must be key-framed the same.
  • should be at least 20 seconds of animation, 24 fps. HD sized. You will finish this in two class periods. So you must be prepared with you materials on the first day of shoot.
  • use green/blue screen, for background so it is separable later in After Effects.
