2-part RESEARCH ASSIGNMENT

The Research Assigment has TWO parts, in total worth 5 points!

PART 1

ATTEND an EXPERIMENTAL art, animation, film event or show and write a short paper.

what to upload to the appropraite class folder:

(1) 300 word, 12 point type, single spaced, report

(2) take a picture ticket to the paper, and/or a selfie at the event, to prove your attendance!

Assignment:

-Visit an Art Museum, Film/Animation, art/media event in the City that you think can directly or indirectly relate to experimental animation. Choose an event off campus, hosted by professional organization or institution. Look for events that feature work that relates visually to animation and the artwork that pushes the boundaries or conventions of things. Look for things you have never seen before do not choose something you already know and like. Choose an event that is really different yet may inspire you to write something. The work can be "experimental" in different ways, such as in sound as well as materials or image. I just mean look for events or shows have a major aim to allow unpredictable or unconventional events to happen. Artwork, animation, music, that uses "chance" or "randomness" may be one example. The "experimental" value of the work is what you should write about.

In your text describe what you see and think, and make sure to answer these questions!:

Why do you think this work, show, event could be called "Experimental"? Do you think the artist's/animators use of experimentation is helpful or unhelpful tin relation success of the work? (by your own judgment)

PART 2

CREATE A "PROJECTION PROPOSAL"

Assignment:

(1) Using paper, give a "projection proposal" for an experimental animation.

There should be at 2 pages. first page should be a 250 word verbal description of your idea, the next page your should draw or diagram your idea.

You may use any media you want to create the image(s) and I can award a couple points extra credit if you go way beyond a simple proposal, so the ambition is up to you.

What is a projection proposal?

We assume that animation would naturally be projection on a flat rectangular or square surface. But what is the surface that animation is projected on, is shaped, custom made, complex, shaped, not solid, or shifting? that possible are endless, as long as you have control over the light.

So come up with a truly "experimental" ideas of how you can project an animation in a very different way

remember:

-the animation itself can be very simple, and keep your ideas simple enough, that this could actually be achieved.

-This is just a proposal, just illustrate your ideas. But be bold and imaginative. Just imagine if you had any budget or equipment you needed, would not be a problem.

here's a few 'projection proposals' examples of mine of the past. Also the actual results shown given.

Your proposal just needs to be a simple description and illustration/diagram of your idea.

Again, you can take this further is you want, create more visualizations, images, with any medium you want to illustrate your idea.
