MacGuffin McGuffin or (maguffin) is a plot device in the form of some goal, desired object, or other motivator that the protagonist (and sometimes the antagonist) is willing to do and sacrifice almost anything to pursue, often with little or no narrative explanation as to why it is considered so desirable. Hitchcock coined this phrase: let's let Hitchcock explain here How could this be used in other media, animation? a video game? For example, in the game The World of Warcraft, ap player will be sent on a quest to retrieve an item. Within that quest, a mimi-story will unfold as the player goes for the item/MacGuffin. While the quest for the item might be important, the story the player experiences on the quest is what is important.
