Premise

In any movie theatre in the United States, there are movie posers or "one sheets". On these posters are graphics, actors, MPAA ratings, and credits. There is also what is referred to as a "tag line". A tag line is a quick couple of sentences that gives the prospective audience information about the theme or idea behind the movie:

(example) Prince of Persia -The Sands of Time: Deceived by the traitorous Vizier, you are led to unleash the Sands of Tie curse upon the Sultan's kingdom. With little but an ancient dagger and a devious princess to aid you, you must undo your fatal error.

In the above case a video game of course..

The Hollywood definition of the premise is a complete story idea encapsulating some kind of story arc.

SPRINGBOARDS AND PREMISES WORK TOGETHER

(Springboard 1) An upside-down fairy tale involving the typical villain, an Ogre, as the hero

(Premise 1) A surly and reclusive ogre and his chatty donkey set out to save their forest home, While doing so, the Ogre finds love and lives happily ever after in spite of the fact he is not the typical "Charming hero.

The premise give us a more rounded idea of what the story is about. and form there it is much easier to jump to the SYNOPSIS
