TICKING CLOCK

In order to add the immediacy to a story, many writers employ the element of a ticking clock. Either literally or symbolically. The main character is given an amount of time to react to each goal, usually in the 1st act,. If the character fails to complete the goal in the time allowed, the consequences are often deadly.

In Armageddon, they have to save the earth from an asteroid. The asteroid itself, in this case is the ticking clock
