The French ward genre translates to style, type, or kind. In Hollywood, the use of the word genre means the very specific backdrop or subject matter. Often a film is classified as a genre such as horror, science fiction, comedy, romance, or action. These descriptions help both the filmmakers and the audience discern and define what a film is about -and, in the case of the audience, it allows room for choice. For example, when a couple goes on a date for the first time, they might want to see a horror film. If it's Halloween weekend, teenagers might want to see a horror film.
