We are used to thinking that we have about 5 senses: sight, sound, smell, taste, touch....

However the idea of finite, numbered senses is extremely limiting, if not incorrect.

Senses can be limitless. And the more you think about experience being a collection of interacting senses, the more visual possibilities will emerge creatively. Try to come up with ideas for new senses: the sense of temperature, the sense of height, the sense of nostalgia, the sense of rhythm, the sense of pattern, the sense of orientation, the sense of irony/humor, the sense of horror, sense of boredom, the sense of contradiction, the sense of embarrassment... Instead of describing these things as feelings or emotions, think of them as SENSES...this lends nicely then to VISUALIZATION.

An increase in observation means an increase in imagination

If you practice this in your artwork, research, observation, and the way you think about the world, you will train your mind to come up with more and more original, dynamic, and creative visualizations/ideas for your work. Whether that sense is based on familiar conventions, contradictions, stereotypes, cliches, new experimentations....all are legitimate attempts at loosening the imagination.

Rather than simply see things are "visual", think of them as SENSES first.

This may be why our first purely visual ideas may not always be the best ones. Yet, by continual seeing, perceiving, open-minded research, always seeking NEW senses, and trying to explore what you did not before... ...the imagination is fueled. A new reality is fueled.

After time, our imagination becomes richer. Our Visual Storytelling becomes richer.

The SENSE of SENSE

The images below, I do not think of as images.

I think of them as SENSES. Even though all are visual information, they represent something far more virtual. We can only "see" these images with our mind that already contains our emotions and precepts. Although these images may seem at first random, they are still part of a visual language that you may be unaware you are already using. For the purposes of this class, I want you to think not in IMAGES but in SENSES. Of courses, there will be much repeats and overlaps of different senses. I am calling this collection The Sense of Sense. I will refer back to key images(ahem..senses) many times over the course, and use the "ideas" that they may contain, again and again.
