PROJECT ASSIGMENT #2
model a Medieval Helmet
description and specs

WHAT TO DO:
Find images, references, photos of a medieval helmet or headdress, which was
actually in existence in that era. Model it as closely as possible, yet simplify
where necessary. Then ADD NEW DETAILS or ELEMENTS, which can only have come
from our own age. The use of Color, reflectivity, texture and bump mapping is
encouraged (due week 6)
see examples of past student work
DUE WHEN?
Due Thursday of Week 6, beginning of class
WHAT TO DELIVER?:
2K sized renders of a modified medieval helmet with realistic textures and lighting.
Be sure to document the name and source of the original helmet resources
You must turn in the following:
-Maya Scene File (.mb or .ma)
-2-3, 2K Render of the helmet with textures and lighting also complete
-the original photo used for reference
WHERE TO DELIVER?:
In the dropbox of “jovelmen”
NOTE:
Find reference for a medieval era helmet or headdress. YOU MUST OBTAIN CLEAR
FRONT AND SIDE VIEWS FOR REFERENCE.
Use image planes of front and side view to build the helmet.
After modeling it according to reference, modify the helmet in some way, change the shape, textures, or add elements which would be only from this era. For instance: candy bar wrappers as plumage instead of feathers. A corporate logo embossed into the side instead of antique-décor. Anything that you can think to both preserve the original helmet and add/change the helmet to give a jolting contemporary change.
You will be using all your Poly modeling tools you have learned thus far.
I would suggests the Poly-box method, which I would have demo-ed in class. You
are free to pursue a different modeling method if you feel more comfortable
(ie NURBS, or spline modeling)
You will be texturing and lighting the helmet using UV texturing methods. The helmet must look realistic, and a through attempt and representing the surface: shiny, rough, bumpy, etc) must be made. Lighting must be realistic, and soft shadows, etc.
REFERENCE HELP
Try going to :
http://www.globaleffects.com/C_c14_frameset.html?Page=rentalP03_c14_P_Helm.html
there are many front and side views of helmets. Below are some pics from that site. Feel free to use one of these if you wish, yet many more you will find on the above site. It is best to redraw the Helmet from the photo reference, using flat (orthogrphic) line art. This will help eliminate any distortion, and help you build "on-model". Do your own research if you want. Use any reference photos that are amenable from the Internet or Library.
