Assingment #2

Create a Medieval Helmet:

(full assignment description)

Find images, references, photos of a medieval helmet or headdress used in that historical era.Model it as closely as possible to reference, yet simplify where necessary. Then add new elements and/or details, which can only have come from our own age. The use of color, reflectivity, texture and bump mapping is encouraged (Assigned Week 4 -Due Week 6)note: students were encouraged to use efficient poly-modeling strategies, (single-poly cage, with low-count, uniform, quad-based topology) and to use UV texture painting in Photoshop for color and bump mapping. They were also encouraged to use realistic lighting, and "Final Gather" with the Mental Ray renderer

These students had no previous experience with Maya. Most finished this assignment in 2 weeks.

Assigment #1

Model An Interior:

(full assignment description)

Find an image of a simple interior shot by a professional photographer (no close ups).Model the room using the techniques taught thus far. Pay attention to light. Texture is optional. (no texture is better than bad texture/placement). Change the mood of your image by altering the light and/or the models. Render 2 lighting versions for final and submit with the original photo.

NOTE: This was their first assignment in Maya.

...to create models that generally prescribe to the reference photo, and modify the light for mood/emotional diffences. They finished this assignment in 2 weeks. It was really an exercise in light, space, and blocking. They were to develop a sesitivity toward a real/palpable space and the psychology of that space.. Since, this was also their first lighting assignment, they were instructed to think about lightsource, direction, shadow, radiocity, diffuse of surfaces, and the play of light on the edges of objects (aliasing/beveling)).The salient point: light, and form are married entities. I asked for only long or medium shots, (no close-ups needing detailed models). I encouraged students NOT to use textures unless they could place them well (using procedural textures or normal or file projections) At early this stage, they were not yet taught about UV layout. They were trained to use low-Poly modeling, yet they could use basic Subdivisional, or NURBS techniques also, as these tools were also taugh in the first week of class.
